Getting Ready Should Feel Exciting!
Getting ready for your dog photography session should feel exciting not stressful. A little prep goes a long way when it comes to creating beautiful relaxed photos that truly feel like you and your dog.
Here is everything you need to know before your Perth dog photography shoot so you can turn up feeling confident and ready to have fun.
Stick to Soft Natural Colours
Perth’s landscapes are full of warm tones, beaches, bushland and open skies. Neutrals photograph beautifully in these settings.
Think: Cream, Beige, Soft greys, Warm browns, Muted greens and Soft blues
Avoid large logos, bold prints and bright neon colours. These pull attention away from your dog and can date your photos quickly.
Wear Something You Can Move In
You will be walking, crouching and sometimes running a little. Choose clothes that feel comfortable and that you do not mind getting a bit sandy or dusty.
Flowy dresses, relaxed jeans, linen shirts and cosy knits all photograph beautifully and keep you feeling like yourself.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think
Closed shoes or boots are ideal for most outdoor locations. If we are shooting at the lake or beach you can bring a second pair to change into for water shots.
Neutral coloured shoes work best so they do not steal attention in your photos.
What Your Dog Should Wear
Your dog does not need anything fancy to look amazing. Simple usually photographs best.
Collars and Harnesses
If your dog is comfortable wearing a thin flat collar that works well. Harnesses are absolutely fine too especially for dogs who feel safer wearing one.
If you have a choice bring something in a neutral colour like black, tan or brown.
Bright red or neon can reflect colour onto fur and distract from your dog’s face.
Leads are always edited out of your final images so do not stress about that part.
Grooming
A quick brush before the session is perfect. If your dog is due for a groom try to book it a few days before the shoot so their coat settles naturally.
Wiping eyes and paws before we start also makes a difference especially for light coloured dogs.
What to Bring With You
A few small items can make a big difference to how smoothly your session runs.
High Value Treats
Bring treats your dog really loves. Think chicken, cheese or anything they would happily work for. These help keep attention and make the session fun and positive for them.
A Favourite Toy
Some dogs light up when a ball or tug toy comes out. This is great for playful natural expressions and action shots.
Water and a Towel
Perth gets warm and many of my sessions include water or beach time. A towel is handy for drying paws and fur between sets.
Poop Bags
Always a good idea especially for outdoor locations.
Final Tip: You Do Not Need to Be Perfect
You do not need to stress about posing or making everything look a certain way. My job is to guide you gently and create a relaxed environment where real moments can happen.
The best photos always come from connection not perfection.
