From Rural Western Australia to Perth Confidence: Roman’s Transformation

If you follow @romansniffs on Instagram you’ve likely felt the warmth and wonder of Roman’s journey. Roman wasn’t born into a life of comfort and cuddles. This boy began his story as a street dog in rural WA, navigating life without safety most dogs take for granted. But fate had other plans and very soon Roman’s life would change.

Roman’s story is a powerful reminder of why rescue matters. At one point he was days away from losing his life if a rescue spot didn’t open up. Every shelter in Perth was full, and without that opening he may never have had a second chance. Thankfully that chance came, and he was welcomed into a loving home with his guardian, Steph.

Steph didn’t just adopt Roman, she became his everything. Her commitment to force-free training and sniffer training gave him tools to engage with the world at his pace and without fear.

Two Photoshoots, Two Very Different Roman

I had the privilege of photographing Roman not once but twice - and the difference between those sessions was amazing.

The first session was memorable. Roman was tentative, quietly observant of everything around him. He was absolutely lovely, but still guarded. Even in front of the camera, he was holding back.

Fast forward to our second photoshoot and the Roman that showed up was almost unrecognisable in his confidence.

He approached the session with curiosity. He gave us full speed and confidence!

That shift didn’t come from magic. Steph’s thoughtful training, filled with patient exposures and respecting Roman’s choices, allowed sincerity to replace nervousness. That confidence glows in every frame.

These shoots don’t just show a handsome dog. They document progress, trust, and comfort with the world. Roman’s gaze is calmer. His body language is freer.

Why Roman’s Story Matters

Roman’s journey from the street to a safe, enriching life is one worth recognising - not just because it’s heart-warming, but because it shows what’s possible when a dog is given time, respect, and space to be themselves.

Roman reminds us that:

Rescue dogs are individuals with their own pace of learning and trust.

Confidence isn’t forced, it’s earned through gentle encouragement.

Sniffer training isn’t just “fun,” it’s meaningful enrichment that builds resilience.

Force-free methods lead to willing participation instead of compliance.

Roman doesn’t just sniff the world now - he engages with it. He looks at new things with interest instead of worry. He meets environments, humans, and experiences with curiosity.

And that transformation is something both Steph and I are proud to have witnessed.
