Here is a look behind the scenes at what an outdoor dog photography session in Perth actually looks like, from planning to picking your final gallery & artwork.

1. Before the Session: Tailoring the Experience

Every dog is unique. A high-energy working breed who loves the beach needs a very different environment than a senior dog who prefers a quiet, shady familiar spot.

Before we ever pick up a camera, we discuss:

• Your Dog’s Personality & Needs: Are they energetic, shy, reactive or easily distracted?
• Location Options: Perth offers incredible outdoor backdrops - from golden coastal beaches and pine forests to quiet suburban parklands. We choose a spot where your dog feels safe and relaxed. I have a very well curated locations list but I am always happy to try new spots. :)
• What to Expect: Tips on what to bring (favorite high-value treats, toys, water) and how to prepare so you feel calm and confident.

2. Arrival & Settling In: No Rush, No Pressure

When we meet at the location, we don't start shooting immediately.

Dogs need time to process new environments, smells and people. The first 10 minutes are dedicated entirely to letting your dog sniff around, greet me on their terms and realise that this is just a fun walk with (probably a lot of) extra treats.

3. During the Shoot: Rwards-Based & Lead-Friendly

Safety and comfort always come first.

Leads Are 100% Okay: Many of the dogs featured in our portfolio were on a lead during their session! We use long leads for safety and freedom of movement and these can easily be edited out in post-processing.

• Capturing Natural Moments: Instead of forcing poses for dogs that might not want to stay, we capture candid action shots, interactions with their person and them just being themselves in their natural environment.
• Positive Reinforcement: We use reward-based methods, treats, toys and plenty of praise to keep the energy light and fun.

4. Getting in the Frame (Optional, But Recommended!)

While your dog is the star of the show, we always encourage owners to jump into a few shots. You don't need to look at the camera or pose perfectly - the best images are often the quiet, unscripted moments of you laughing, walking together or sharing a cuddle.

5. After the Session: Bringing Your Memories to Life

After our session, the images are carefully edited to bring out rich colors, natural lighting, and crisp details (including lead removal where needed). You'll receive a gallery of high-resolution images ready as digital download & the potential to print them.
