The Best Dog Photography Locations in Perth

Choosing the right location for your dog photoshoot can make a big difference, not just for how your photos look but also for how relaxed your dog feels during the session.

Perth is lucky to have a wide variety of beautiful outdoor locations that work perfectly for natural dog photography. Quiet bushland, sandy riverbanks, forest trails and open spaces all offer very different scenery and each location creates a slightly different feel in your images.

Over the years I have found locations that work particularly well for dog photography because they offer space, beautiful light and enough variety to create a full gallery of images.

Below are some of my favourite locations for dog photoshoots around Perth. Some tend to be a bit busier and some are very quiet. We always take this into consideration depending on how your dog feels about people, other dogs and new environments.

South Perth Skyline

If you love the idea of combining nature with a city backdrop, the South Perth foreshore is a beautiful location to consider.

This spot offers views of the Perth skyline across the river while still giving dogs plenty of space to run, explore and interact naturally during the session. The sandy shoreline and shallow water make it a great option for dogs that enjoy chasing toys, splashing around or simply exploring new environments.

At sunset the skyline softens into warm golden tones, which creates a really beautiful backdrop while still keeping the focus on the connection between you and your dog.

I have two different spots along the foreshore - one is easier for reactive dogs than the other. Keep in mind that we will need a helper for this spot to keep a lookout for dogs walking past. There aren't many but better safe than sorry!

Pine Plantation

The pine forest is one of my favourite forest locations for dog photography.

The tall pine trees create soft filtered light and beautiful depth in the background, which gives photos a slightly dreamy feel without looking overly staged. The sandy trails running through the forest also provide plenty of space for dogs to move comfortably and naturally throughout the session.

Because of the variety within of forest, pathways and sand, this location works well for a mix of playful action shots, relaxed walking moments and quieter portraits with your dog.

Weekdays are usually the best option here if your dog prefers calmer environments, as weekends can sometimes be a little busier.

Lake Gnangara

Lake Gnangara is one of the most versatile locations available for dog photography in Perth - but bear in mind that we only have water in the winter, as the lake dries out during summer months.

Within a relatively small area we can find sandy paths, open spaces, water reflections and natural bushland scenery, which allows us to create a lot of variety in your final gallery.

Having different backdrops within the same location means we can move through the area slowly and adapt the session depending on how your dog is feeling.

This location can work particularly well for dogs that benefit from having a bit more space around them.

Beach Sessions

Perth’s coastline offers some incredible opportunities for relaxed and playful dog photoshoots.

The soft sand, gentle movement of the ocean and warm sunset light create images that feel natural and full of energy.

Many dogs absolutely love this environment because it gives them the freedom to run, explore and play while we capture those moments naturally.

Beach sessions are especially popular for dogs that enjoy water but they also work beautifully for relaxed walking shots along the shoreline as the sun sets over the ocean.

There are a number of dog friendly beaches around Perth and we can always choose the best option depending on your dog’s personality and the style of photos you love most.

Bushland Locations

Bushland locations are some of my personal favourites for dog photography.

They offer soft natural colours, beautiful golden evening light and quiet trails where dogs can explore at their own pace. The calm atmosphere in these environments often helps dogs settle into the session more easily, which leads to more natural and relaxed photos.

Because the scenery changes as we move along the trails, bushland locations also allow us to create a nice variety of images without needing to travel far.

My favourite bushland locations are Warwick & Jorgensen Park, with the latter being quite busy with dogs and Warwick being really quiet.

Why I Don’t Usually Photograph Dogs in Suburban Parks

A question I sometimes get is whether we can simply meet at a local park in your suburb for the photoshoot.

While it might sound convenient, suburban parks are usually not the best locations for dog photography sessions.

Many parks are quite busy, especially in the evenings and on weekends, which means there are often lots of people, children and other dogs moving through the area. For many dogs this can be distracting or stressful and it can make it harder to create a relaxed environment during the session.

Another challenge is that many parks have large open grass areas with very limited tree coverage. This means the light can be quite harsh, particularly earlier in the evening, and there are fewer options for creating soft natural lighting in photos.

Visually, parks also tend to offer very limited variety in scenery. Most look fairly similar with grass, a few scattered trees and playground equipment, which makes it harder to create a gallery with different backdrops and perspectives.

For this reason I usually recommend locations that offer a bit more space, natural scenery and quieter surroundings, which ultimately leads to a more relaxed experience for your dog and a much more varied gallery of images.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Dog

Every dog is different, which is why the location we choose will always depend on your dog’s personality and comfort level.

Some dogs love water and wide open spaces, while others feel more comfortable in quiet bushland with fewer distractions.

When you book your session, I will help guide you through the available locations so we can choose a spot that suits your dog best and allows them to feel relaxed and confident during the experience.

Because at the end of the day, the most meaningful photos always happen when your dog can simply be themselves.
